The focus of the game's story is the Kid's quest to create a safe haven, known as the Bastion. The game revolves around a silent protagonist who is referred to as the Kid. It's a fairly cheap game, and you can easily go through the whole thing in one evening.Bastion is an action role-playing game set in the world of Caelondia after it has been destroyed by an event known as the Calamity, a doomsday of sorts. With that said, I strongly recommend playing this game on any of the default difficulty settings just to experience Bastion's unique setting, charming characters, and top notch soundtreck. Probably most obnoxious part of combat for me was the fact that collisions often don't match the visuals, leading to many frustrating moments when your dodge just gets snagged on a rogue pixel, which is often enough to really mess you up if you got aforementioned skull turned on. True to most optional difficulties in games, it doesn't feel like it was designed around it, so it leads so some very uneven difficulty and levels of bull. If you want more of a challenge, the game offers something similar to Skulls in Halo where you can toggle on unique modifiers that make combat more challenging, but most of it comes down to either frustrating RNG, or just outright buffing enemies in every way. The lack of enemies with unique attack patterns makes the combat extremely repetitive, which is only somewhat redeemed by the game showering you with new weapons to try, but despite decent variety, there's rarely a reason to switch things up, especially considering that upgrades make quite a big difference in damage towards the late game. The enemies are just as basic, they often have only one obvious and well telegraphed attack, and outside of minor variations, you fight them all in roughly the same way. You can augment things, somewhat, by mixing and matching weapon upgrades, ultimate skills, and tonics that serve as perks with unique buffs and debuffs, but most of the combat remains very simple. No fancy combos or complicated abilities. You carry two unique weapons (typically melee + ranged, but you can pick any combination you want), have a dash, and a shile that allows you to either block or parry. Bastion is an extremely basic isometric action game. Now the gameplay didn't age nearly as well as any of the other elements, and if anything, would probably just as bad when judging it on release. I feel like the dynamic part of commentary is way limited and doesn't really amount to much, but it is kind of charming when it works. Back around release it was often praised for the narrator, who didn't just sound good, but also reacted to player's actions in specific situations. Lastly, the game has an extremely simple plot, but it works rather well by focusing on the characters and not overstaying its welcome, it grabs you more through emotion than any sort of complex storytelling or twists. Chances are, you probably heard some of these tracks as background music for random game related videos, it's just so good that works really well both in the game and outside of it. There's a lot of it and it's consistently great. The cartoony aestehtic with exaggerated proportions and super-deformed characters also gave the titular Bastion quite a cozy feel once you build it up. None of the individual designs are quite as distinct or inspired as their future games, but it comes together so nicely, especially thanks to the game's gimmick of building the levels as you go through them. To start with the positives, everything that has to do with visuals, audio, and storytelling aged amazingly well. Their current pedigree might set high expectations, but surprisingly enough, I think Bastion lives up to most of them. You either want to play all the games from this much praised studio, or checked it out after playing their more recent games. I imagine most people checking this game out in 2023 and beyond will have a similar reason for playing this. After sitting on this game for around 10 years, I finally came back and beat it a few months ago in order to go through Supergiant's stacked portfolio.
